County Tournament vs. Elk Lake

After falling behind by 22 points in the 3rd quarter, the Susquehanna Sabers battled back on Sunday night and got within 6 points before falling to the Elk Lake Warriors in the championship game of the Susquehanna County Holiday Tournament by the final score of 62-49.  The Sabers fell to 6-2, 0-0 on the season.

All-tournament selection Dan Biegert led the way for the Sabers, recording a game high 20 points to go along with 4 rebounds.  Andrzej Tomczyk chipped in with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.  Big men Cole Mallery (8 points, 8 rebounds) and Mark Zappe (6 rebounds and 4 blocks) also contributed for the Sabers.

The Sabers are off until Thursday, January 3rd when they open up Lackawanna League Division IV play at home against Forest City.  JV game time is 6:00 PM.

Game Postponed

Today's game at Elk Lake has been postponed until tomorrow--Sunday, December 30th--due to inclement weather. 

Game time is 7:30 PM.

County Tournament vs. Montrose

The Sabers boys basketball team pushed their season record to 6-1 on the season by defeating the Montrose Meteors 52-48 in the first round of the Susquehanna County Holiday Tournament. 

Trailing 18-14 at halftime, the Sabers used a strong second half defensive effort to build a nine point 4th quarter lead.  The Sabers were led by Andrzej Tomczyk's 25 points, 6 steals and 5 rebounds.  Mark Zappe contributed 6 points and a team-high 6 rebounds while Josh Wheeler chipped in with 8 points, 2 assists and 2 steals.

The Sabers will take on Elk Lake on Saturday night at 7:30 PM.

Northwest vs. Susquehanna

The Susquehanna Sabers hosted Northwest Area on Saturday night and we able to earn a split in two games as the JV fell 55-29 and the varsity won 61-57 in overtime. 

The JV Sabers (3-2) found themselves in a 20 point first half hole and were unable to climb out of it as they fell 55-29.  The Sabers were led by Nate Carpenter's 9 points while Luke Falletta added 6 points.

In the nightcap, the Sabers (5-1, 0-0) squandered a nine point 4th quarter lead, only to hold Northwest to two field goals in overtime to seal the win 61-57.  Andrzej Tomczyk scored 31 points, collected 7 rebounds, handed out 6 assists and captured 3 steals to lead the team.  Cole Mallery added 13 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists and Dan Biegert tallied 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.  Mark Zappe hauled in 6 rebounds and Josh Wheeler hit two free throws late to seal the win.

The Sabers are off until December 27th when they play Montrose in the first round of the Susquehanna County Christmas tournament at Elk Lake.  Game time is 6:00 PM.  There is no JV game.

Susquehanna vs. Wyoming Seminary

The Sabers boys basketball teams earned a split in their games on Tuesday night at Wyoming Seminary with the JV team winning 38-34 to improve their record to 3-1, while the varsity suffered their first defeat of the season 52-40.

The JV Sabers faced a nine point 4th quarter deficit, but mounted a comeback behind Austin Felter (team high 10 points) and Kyle MacDonald (9 points).  Big man Steve Frye contributed 6 points in the victory.

In the nightcap, the Sabers built a 26-21 halftime lead, only to suffer through a offensive slump in the second half before eventually falling 52-40.  Cole Mallery led the Sabers with 20 points, while Mark Zappe chipped in with 8 points and 3 assists.

The Sabers host Northwest Area on Saturday night 6:00 PM.

Susquehanna vs. Mountain View

The Sabers boys basketball team (4-0, 0-0) captured the McLaughlin Tournament championship on Saturday night with a 74-62 victory over Mountain View.

Tournament MVP Andrzej Tomczyk led the Sabers with 25 points, 7 steals and 5 assists.  Cole Mallery joined Tomczyk on the all-tournament team following his 24 point, 7 rebound, 4 assist and 3 steal performance.  Dan Biegert also contributed 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. 

The Sabers are off until Tuesday night, when they travel to Wyoming Seminary.  Game time is 6:00 PM.

Afton vs. Susquehanna

The Sabers varsity boys basketball team improved their early season record to 3-0 on Friday night with a 64-40 win over Afton in the first round of the McLaughlin Tournament at Mountain View. 

Andrzej Tomczyk led the Sabers with 18 points to go along with 3 rebounds and 3 steals.  Josh Wheeler contributed 10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench while Brandon Soden accounted for a team high 13 rebounds and 5 assists. 

On Saturday, the JV boys basketball team defeated Afton by a score of 51-30.  The Sabers were led by Steve Frye's 18 points.  Evan Stone added 10, while Nate Carpenter and Cody Towers each chipped in 6 for the Sabers. 

The Sabers varsity team will play host Mountain View on Saturday night in the championship game, set to start at 7:00 PM.

McLaughlin Tournament at Mountain View

The boys varsity basketball team will be participating in the McLaughlin Tournament at Mountain View High School on Friday, December 14th and Saturday, December 15th.  The tournament schedule for the varsity team is as follows:

Friday, December 14th:  6:00 PM vs. Afton
Saturday, December 15th:  3:00 PM OR 7:00 PM vs. TBA

The junior varsity team will also be playing one game as part of the tournament on Saturday, December 15th.  Game time is 1:00 PM vs. Afton in the Mountain View Elementary Gym.

Susquehanna at Western Wayne

The Sabers boys basketball team earned a split on Tuesday night at Western Wayne, with the JV team losing 53-36 and the varsity winning 58-49.

The JV team (1-1) found themselves in a large halftime deficit, but continued to fight.  They were led by Steve Frye's 8 points, while Nate Carpenter chipped in 6 and Luke Falletta added 5.

In the nightcap, the varsity team executed their offense down the stretch to improve to 2-0 on the young season.  Cole Mallery led the Sabers with 30 points and 13 rebounds.  Andrzej Tomczyk added 15 points, 7 assists and 3 steals while Josh Wheeler contributed 9 points off the bench. 

The Sabers are off until Friday, December 14th when they travel to Mountain View High School to take on Afton as part of the Bill McLaughlin tournament.  Game time on Friday night is 6:00 PM.

NE Bradford vs. Susquehanna

The Susquehanna Sabers boys basketball teams began the 2012-2013 season with two home victories on Friday night over the NE Bradford Panthers. 

The JV team built a 41-9 fourth quarter lead before eventually coasting to a 41-26 victory.  The JV Sabers were led by big men Steve Frye (12 points), Nate Carpenter (10 points) and Evan Stone (8 points). 

In the nightcap, the varsity built a 25 point halftime lead before eventually winning 75-37.  The Sabers were led by Mark Zappe (15 points, 5 rebounds), Andrzej Tomczyk (15 points, 6 assists, 6 steals), Cole Mallery (12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks) and Josh Wheeler (11 points, 4 steals).

The Sabers will travel to Western Wayne on Tuesday, December 11th for their first road test against the Wildcats.  Game time is 6:00 PM.

Season Opener vs. NE Bradford

The Boys JV and Varsity boys basketball teams will begin the 2012-2013 season at home on Friday, December 7th vs. Northeast Bradford!  The JV game will begin at 5:30 with the Varsity game to follow.

The JV and Varsity boys basketball teams will be taking on Lakeland and Berwick on Saturday, November 24th at 12:00 NOON.  The JV team will be scrimmaging in the Elementary Gym and the Varsity team will be in the High School Gym.

Mandatory Parent Meeting

There will be a mandatory parent, players and coaches meeting on Wednesday, November 14th at 7:00 PM in the high school gym for all players who plan on trying out for the boys basketball team this year. This meeting will serve as a way for parents and players to get introduced to the coaching staff, discuss team rules and regulations, as well as receive schedules for the upcoming season. 

If a parent cannot attend the meeting, please contact Coach Tompkins so a meeting can be a scheduled at another time.

No player will be able to practice on Friday, November 16th without having a parent attend the meeting.

The Boys Basketball team will be selling raffle tickets at the Friday, October 19th home football game against Lackawanna Trail.  The game begins at 7:00 PM.  Tickets are $10 each and cash prizes will be raffled off on Friday, November 2nd.  Stop by and support the Sabers Boys Basketball team on Friday night!

Fall Fundraiser and Workouts

Beginning the first week of October, all potential JV and Varsity basketball players will be selling raffle tickets to help raise money for team sneakers and other clothing that will be purchased for the upcoming season.  Players are being asked to sell 10 tickets and turn in the money, along with ticket stubs, but November 1st.  The drawing will be held on November 2nd. 

Open Gym workouts are currently being held on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 in the Elementary Gym.  All potential players who are not currently playing a fall sport are encouraged to attend.  Workouts will focus on skill development and conditioning. 

Letters will be mailed home within the next couple of weeks outlining plans for the month of October and the pre-season conditioning in early November.

The Susquehanna Sabers Boys Basketball team will host a golf tournament fundraiser on Saturday, June 2nd at 12:30 PM at the Golden Oak Golf Course in Windsor, NY. 

Players and parents are asked to come and help out the day of the tournament.

Susquehanna vs. Faith Christian

The Susquehanna Sabers saw their season come to end on Friday night at Scranton High School with a 57-41 defeat at the hands of the Faith Christian Lions (District 1).  After building a 5 point halftime lead, the Sabers (8-16, 3-11) could not keep up the pace in the second half. 

Andrzej Tomczyk led the Sabers with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.  Cole Mallery pulled down a team high 8 rebounds to go with his 14 points and sophomore Brandon Soden scored 6 points off the bench.

2012 District II A Champions!

The Susquehanna Sabers (8-15, 3-11) defeated the Old Forge Blue Devils 53-45 on Friday night at Scranton High School to claim the school's first district championship since 1961. 

In a total team effort, Andrzej Tomczyk scored 15 points, Cole Mallery scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds and Austin Cowperthwait scored 11 points, including 7 straight free throws in the 4th Quarter.  Brandon Soden scored 7 points off the bench and Mark Zappe added 5 points and 4 rebounds.

MMI Prep vs. Susquehanna

The Susquehanna Sabers (7-15, 3-11) advanced to the PIAA District II A Championship game and clinched a spot in the PIAA State Tournament with a 42-39 win over the MMI Preppers on Tuesday night at North Pocono High School. 

Andrzej Tomczyk scored 20 points and pulled down 8 rebounds to lead the Sabers, while Cole Mallery added 8 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.  Dan Biegert handed out a team high 3 assists and Mark Zappe blocked 3 shots to help earn the win.

The Sabers will next face the Old Forge Blue Devils on Friday night at 7:00 PM at Scranton High School.

Susquehanna at Berwick

The Susquehanna Sabers finished out regular season play on Saturday afternoon by taking on the Berwick Bulldogs.  The Sabers split a pair of games, with the varsity team scoring a 70-63 victory following the JV team's 41-32 defeat. 

The JV Sabers were led by Josh Wheeler's 10 points, while Brandon Rafferty chimed in with 7 points and Cody Towers added 5.  The JV team finished their season with a record of 3-16.

In the varsity game, Andrzej Tomzcyk scored 26 points, including the 1,000th of his varsity career on a free throw with under a minute remaining in regulation.  Tomczyk also dished out 5 assists.  Cole Mallery led the Sabers with 29 points and 11 rebounds, including what turned out to be the game winning basket and ensuing foul shot off a nice feed from Zach Vaughn with about a minute to go.  Brandon Soden contributed 7 points off the bench, and Austin Cowperthwait handed out 4 assists.

The Sabers (6-15, 3-11) will now await word from District II as to their playoff seeding for the Class A playoffs, which will begin on Tuesday, February 28th.

Susquehanna at Lackawanna Trail

The Susquehanna Sabers closed out league play in Division III on Tuesday night at Lackawanna Trail.  Both the JV and the Varsity teams ended their league schedule with losses.  The JV team was led by Josh Wheeler's 11 points, while Luke Falletta added 9 points and Cody Towers 7 points in the 54-39 defeat.

The Varsity team saw their league play end with a 68-43 loss at the hands of the Lions.  Cole Mallery led Susquehanna in scoring with 12 points and added 6 rebounds.  Austin Cowperthwait led the Sabers with a team high 8 rebounds, while Brandon Soden pulled down 7 rebounds in the losing effort.

The Sabers (5-15, 3-11) will be traveling to Berwick on Saturday to make up a game against the Bulldogs.  JV Game time is scheduled for 1:00 PM.

Susquehanna vs. Montrose

On Friday night, the Sabers boys basketball teams lost a pair of contests on the road to the Montrose Meteors.  The JV team played a sluggish first half, then made a spirited comback that eventually fell short in the 2nd half as they lost 36-32.  The Sabers were led by Josh Wheeler's 13 points while Luke Falletta chipped in with 10 points.

The Varsity Sabers saw their season record fall to (5-14, 3-10) with a 66-55 loss to the Meteors.  The Sabers were led by Cole Mallery's 17 points and 8 rebounds while Andrzej Tomczyk added 15 points and 4 steals.  Austin Cowperthwait contributed 9 points and 3 assists while Dan Biegert's 4 assists were a team high.  Mark Zappe added 6 points in the losing effort.

The Sabers next travel to Lackawanna Trail on Tuesday night to take on the Lions in the final Division III game of the season.  Game time is 6:00 PM.

Lakeland vs. Susquehanna

On Tuesday night, the Susquehanna Sabers hosted the Lakeland Chiefs on Senior Night.  Both the JV and Varsity teams suffered defeats.

In the JV Game, the Sabers got 13 points from Kyle MacDonald, 12 points from Josh Wheeler and 11 from Nate Carpenter, but couldn't pull out a win, eventually falling 48-39.





In the nightcap, the Sabers (5-13, 3-9) once again found themselves in an early deficit which proved too much to overcome resulting in an 89-75 loss.  Andrzej Tomczyk led the Sabers with 35 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.  Cole Mallery contributed 16 points while Dan Biegert added 6 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.  Senior Austin Cowperthwait, playing in his last home game, scored 6 points and collected 4 rebounds.

The Sabers will travel to Montrose on Friday night to take on the Meteors.  JV Game time is 6:00 PM.

Susquehanna at Elk Lake

On Friday night, the Susquehanna Sabers improved their record to 5-12, 3-8 on the season with a 60-55 road victory over the Elk Lake Warriors. 

The Sabers were led by Cole Mallery's 24 points and 14 rebounds.  Austin Cowperthwait added 15 points and 6 rebounds while Dan Biegert distributed a team high 8 assists. 

To start the night, the JV Sabers played well, but lost to Elk Lake 44-32.  Josh Wheeler led the team with 16 points while Steve Frye contributed 6 points off the bench.

The Sabers are off until Tuesday night when they host the Lakeland Chiefs on Senior Night in the team's last home game of the season.

Susquehanna at Mountain View

On Tuesday night, the Susquehanna Sabers varsity boys basketball team snapped a ten game losing streak at Mountain View, defeating the Eagles by a score of 50-44.  With the win, the Sabers improved their record to 4-12, 2-8. 

Andrzej Tomczyk led the Sabers with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals.  Cole Mallery added 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals while Dan Biegert contributed 6 rebounds and Austin Cowperthwait recorded a team high 4 assists. 



The JV team lost a well-played game by the score of 46-35.  With the loss, the JV Sabers saw their two game win streak snapped.

The Sabers are off until Friday when they travel to Elk Lake to take on the Warriors.  JV Game time is set to tip off at 6:00 PM.

Blue Ridge vs. Susquehanna

Coaches vs. Cancer Saturday in the Lackawanna League saw the Sabers hosting the Blue Ridge Raiders.  The JV Sabers got the day started off right with their second consecutive win and third overall by the score of 48-44.  Josh Wheeler led the overall team effort with 19 points. 

The Varsity Sabers (3-12, 1-8) found themselves in a large halftime deficit which they could not overcome, losing by a score of 83-72.  Andrzej Tomczyk (24 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists), Cole Mallery (21 points, 16 rebounds) and Dan Biegert (12 points, 4 assists) led the way for Susquehanna.





The Sabers will be on the road for two games next week, beginning on Tuesday night at Mountain View.  JV game time is set for 6:00 PM.

Forest City vs. Susquehanna

Thursday night saw the 2nd half of Lackawanna League Division III play begin with the Sabers hosting the Foresters from Forest City.

The JV team was able to earn their 2nd victory of the season, defeating Forest City by a score of 30-29.  Josh Wheeler led the Sabers with 11 points.

The varsity team was not as fortunate.  Finding themselves in two separate 18 point deficits, the Sabers were able to claw their way back before losing to the Foresters 58-56.  Cole Mallery recorded a double-double for Susquehanna (3-11, 1-7) with 31 points and 12 rebounds.  Andrzej Tomczyk contributed 13 points and 5 assists while Dan Biegert pulled down 8 rebounds. 

The Sabers are off until Saturday afternoon, when they host rival Blue Ridge on Coaches vs. Cancer night.  JV top time is 2:00 PM.

Lackawanna Trail vs. Susquehanna

On Thursday night, the Sabers finished up the first half of the Lackawanna League Division III schedule with two losses at the hands of the Lions. In the JV game, the Sabers showed more effort in the second half, but couldn't make up a sizable halftime deficit in falling to the Lions by the score of 44-22.  Josh Wheeler led the Sabers with 9 points.

In the nightcap, Andrzej Tomczyk's 26 points and 4 steals were not enough as the Sabers (3-10, 1-6) lost 69-56.  Dan Biegert added 8 points and Austin Cowperthwait handed out 4 assists.

The Sabers are scheduled to travel to Berwick on Saturday to take on the Bulldogs.  JV game time is 1:00 PM.

Montrose vs. Susquehanna

On Tuesday night, the Sabers boys basketball teams both suffered home defeats to the Montrose Meteors.  Luke Falletta led the JV Sabers in their game with a team high 10 points.

In the varsity game, the Sabers (3-9, 1-5) battled the Meteors throughout the second half, but could get no closer than 10 points.  Andrzej Tomczyk led the Sabers in scoring with 22 points.  Cole Mallery recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Dan Biegert chimed in with 12 points and 4 assists.

The Sabers finish the first half of their division schedule on Thursday night at home against the Lackawanna Trail Lions.  JV tip is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

Susquehanna vs. Lakeland

At Lakeland on Sunday, the JV and Varsity boys teams were both dealt losses by the Lakeland Chiefs.

On the varsity level, the Sabers saw their season record fall to 3-8, 1-4 following their 76-37 loss.  Andrzej Tomczyk was the lone Saber in double figures with 11 points.  Cole Mallery contributed 9 points, Mark Zappe 6 and Dan Biegert 5. 

The Sabers are off until Tuesday, when they host the division leading Montrose Meteors.  JV tip time is 6:00 PM.

Elk Lake vs. Susquehanna

The Elk Lake Warriors completed a sweep of the Susquehanna Sabers boys basketball teams on Tuesday night.  The JV team lost 43-20, with Kyle MacDonald leading the way for the Sabers with 9 points.

In varsity action, the Sabers lost 54-37, to see their season record fall to 3-7, 1-3 in division play.  Andrzej Tomczyk scored 16 points and added 11 rebounds and 3 assists while Mark Zappe scored 8 points, hauled down 9 rebounds and blocked 8 shots. 

The Sabers are off until Sunday afternoon, when they travel to Lakeland to take on the Chiefs.  JV game time is scheduled for 2:00 PM.

Mountain View vs. Susquehanna

The Sabers basketball teams lost another pair of home games on Friday night when the JV team fell 45-37 and the varsity lost a close game by the score of 44-41 to the visiting Eagles. 

The JV team was led by Brandon Rafferty's 7 points, while Luke Falletta and Kyle MacDonald contributed 6 points each.

The varsity was led by Andrzej Tomczyk's 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.  Austin Cowperthwait contributed 9 points and 9 rebounds, while Brandon Soden chipped in with 9 points as well. 

The Sabers (3-6, 1-2) are off until Tuesday night when they host the Elk Lake Warriors.  The JV game will begin at 6:00 PM.

Susquehanna vs. Blue Ridge

The Sabers JV and Varsity basketball teams both suffered losses on Tuesday night at Blue Ridge. 

The JV team lost a close, back and forth battle by the score of 27-24.  The Sabers were led by Brandon Raffety (9 points) and Kyle MacDonald (7 points).

The Varsity team started the game strong, but Blue Ridge pulled away in the second half for a 65-46 victory.  The Sabers (3-5, 1-1) were led by Andrzej Tomczyk (25 points, 8 rebounds) and Dan Biegert (8 rebounds).  Brandon Soden also chipped in with 6 points.



The Sabers are off until Friday, when they host Mountain View.  JV game time is slated for 6:00 PM.
